RETAIL/GROCERY
CHALLENGE
Upgrading the interior and exterior lighting at a gas station required a solution that would improve energy efficiency while giving the customer greater control and visibility. Previously, store managers often did not know when fixtures failed or when certain areas were using more energy than expected until a customer reported an issue or the utility bill increased.
SOLUTION
The customer worked with an Ameren Illinois Small Business Direct Install Program Ally to upgrade the facility with energy-efficient LED lighting and LLLC. The new system can remotely identify fixture failures and unusual operating patterns, allowing maintenance teams to address issues proactively. It also gives the customer greater control over when and how lighting is used throughout the property.

WAREHOUSE
CHALLENGE
High-bay fixtures above warehouse storage aisles operated continuously throughout each shift, even in areas with limited activity. Because most fixtures in the facility were high-wattage, high-lumen models, lighting represented one of the building’s largest energy expenses.
SOLUTION
Through the Ameren Illinois Small Business Direct Install Program, the facility replaced 460 four-foot T8 fixtures with energy-efficient LEDs equipped with LLLC. Fixture-level occupancy sensors automatically reduce or turn off lighting in unoccupied aisles and return fixtures to full output as soon as movement is detected. This approach allows each area to respond independently, helping reduce unnecessary energy use without affecting visibility, operations or safety.

OFFICE
CHALLENGE
Across multiple office locations, open workspaces, private offices, conference rooms and common areas operated on building-wide lighting schedules. As a result, lights often remained at full output in unoccupied spaces, including during low-occupancy periods and after-hours cleaning, creating unnecessary energy use across the portfolio.
SOLUTION
Through the Ameren Illinois Energy Efficiency Program, more than 8,000 light fixtures were converted to LLLC integration. The LLLC lighting allowed each office, conference room and workstation light to be controlled independently; lighting in unoccupied rooms turn off within minutes and building engineers get usage data broken out by suite for tenant billback or lease reporting.

SCHOOL
CHALLENGE
The school’s classrooms, hallways and gymnasium relied on aging fluorescent fixtures controlled by fixed schedules. Lighting often remained on during free periods, after-hours activities and school breaks, creating unnecessary energy use. At the same time, the district’s capital budget had limited funding available for a comprehensive lighting and controls upgrade.
SOLUTION
Through the Ameren Illinois Small Business Direct Install Program, the school upgraded its classrooms, hallways and gymnasium with energy-efficient LED lighting and luminaire-level lighting controls. The new system allows lighting to respond more effectively to occupancy and building use, helping reduce energy waste while maintaining appropriate light levels for students, staff and activities. The program covered eligible equipment, labor and commissioning costs, allowing the district to complete the project with no out-of-pocket expense.
