On behalf of Ameren Illinois, I would like to welcome you to the Market Development Initiative (MDI) Sumer Internship Program! For almost ten years, the Ameren Illinois MDI has been leading the way in energy efficiency and clean energy while helping thousands of customers improve comfort, manage usage and reduce costs. We are so excited to have you, employers and interns, participate in the Summer Internship Program. Interns, over the new few months, you will have the opportunity to learn more about career opportunities in clean energy and energy efficiency while developing new skills through hands-on experiences. Employers, thank you for providing your intern with valuable mentorship and expanding employment opportunities in the clean energy industry. The Ameren Illinois Summer Internship Program connects businesses and organizations with talented interns pursuing careers in clean energy. This section provides everything you need to know as an employer, including requirements, benefits, and FAQs.
Employer Application Requirements
If your business or organization would like to hire an intern through the Summer Internship Program, you must submit your application by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2026.
The Employer Application includes:
Company Information:
- Business name, typ and address where the intern will work
- Note: Your company must operate within the Ameren Illinois service territory
Contact Information:
- Your name, role and preferred contact details
Internship Details:
- A clear job description, including duties, responsibilities and qualifications
- Estimated hourly wage and weekly hours (interns typically work 30–40 hours per week)
- Recommended minimum duration: 10-12 weeks
- Equipment or resources needed for the intern to perform daily duties (e.g., uniform, laptop, mileage stipend)

- Outline the costs needed to be covered by the Ameren Illinois Market Development Initiative

Who funds the Summer Internship Program?
The Ameren Illinois Market Development Initiative provides funding for approved internships.
How and when will I be paid?
Payments are made based upon an invoice submitted by your organization. Invoicing details will be provided when your application is approved. NOTE: funds are not paid upfront.

What does a typical work week look like for an intern?
- Gain additional staff support during the summer

- Interns and Employers are required to attend two in-person Program events.

Are interns evaluated?
Ameren Illinois does not formally evaluate interns but will assist with any performance concerns.
Can I hire my intern after the program ends?
Yes! We encourage employers to offer permanent positions if the intern is a good fit.
More than 50% of employers since 2023 have hired their interns for permanent positions.

Time Commitment - What to Expect
Work Schedule
- Interns typically work 30–40 hours per week for a minimum of 10 weeks.
- Your schedule will be determined by your employer. Communicate early about start/end times and any flexibility needed.

- Wrap-Up Celebration – August 5, 2026
- Participate in one volunteer event. You are welcome to attend both scheduled volunteer events.

Do I get paid?
Yes! Your employer will pay you directly based on the hourly wage agreed upon in your offer.
What if I have performance concerns?

Are there mandatory activities outside of work?
Yes:
- Two in-person program events (Kickoff and Wrap-Up).
- At least one volunteer event.
- Six webinars throughout the summer.
